MFL

Intent Statement

Developing an awareness of, and celebrating different cultures and traditions is a strength at Meadowhead Junior school. We understand that early acquisition of another language enhances the richness and diversity of different cultures.  A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and broaden their perspective of the world. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing by introducing concepts of how the language works in an age-appropriate manner.

We aim to provide every child in our school the opportunity to experience a different language and culture through interactive and engaging lessons and activities.

Our intention is that by the end of our children’s primary education, we have inspired a love of language as part of their lifelong journey of learning and equipped every child with the skills that will open further opportunities later in life.

Our aims at Meadowhead Junior to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation Statement

Our MFL program, delivered through weekly Junior Jam sessions, is designed to build on a pupil's prior knowledge while adapting to their individual needs. This approach ensures that children progress effectively through the French language, cultivating a comprehensive understanding.

The Junior Jam curriculum has been thoughtfully structured to provide opportunities for our children to develop essential skills aligned with key learning objectives. As children advance through school, they will experience consistent growth in their language abilities.

The key objectives for language learning are organised into five strands: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar. This structured framework enables children to engage with the language in diverse ways, allowing them to communicate their ideas effectively and deepen their understanding of French.

By integrating these five strands into our lessons, we aim to create a rich, interactive learning environment where children feel confident in using the language and can make meaningful connections with it. Our goal is to equip every child with the skills they need to succeed in their language learning journey.

Impact Statement

Through the Junior Jam MFL programme, children gain confidence, knowledge, and transferable skills that are essential for their language journey. As they progress to Key Stage 3 (KS3) and beyond, children carry with them a solid foundation in French that supports their continued language development in further education.

Our focus on engaging and interactive lessons fosters a love for language learning, empowering children to communicate effectively and appreciate cultural diversity. This preparation not only enhances their academic performance in languages but also equips them with valuable skills applicable in various contexts, enriching their overall educational experience.

Ultimately, our MFL curriculum ensures that our children at Meadowhead Juniors are well-prepared for future language studies, enabling them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
